Some of the world’s well-known destinations have undergone successful renewal after the rejuvenation of obsolete river ports.

Places like Canary Wharf in London, the Victoria and Albert Waterfront in Cape Town and Barangaroo in Sydney are evidence that well-planned redevelopment projects bring new global interest, strong economic returns and demand for integrated mixed-use residential, tourist, entertainment and commercial development.

Creating a long-term shared vision and plan for the future of both Victoria Quay and North Quay, in partnership with the community, has the potential to promote Fremantle | Walyalup’s international credentials as a thriving maritime city and destination.

A multi-disciplinary team that included experts in urban planning and design, economic development, coastal engineering, heritage, transport and stakeholder engagement, was formed to help shape a vision that builds on Fremantle’s unique identity and character and contributes to its reputation as one of the world’s great waterfront cities.

The process involved an extensive and collaborative engagement program supported by background investigations, research and case studies, technical reports and global trend analysis. The work also considered emerging industry sectors and relevant state, national and global connections.
