The involvement of the Aboriginal community has been a cornerstone of the Future of Fremantle Project.

The Fremantle | Walyalup area is rich in Aboriginal history and holds great cultural important to the Whadjuk Noongar people.

On behalf of the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage, Aboriginal-owned consultancy, Kambarang Services, led an extensive engagement program consisting of cultural tours, Aboriginal Elders workshops and other events that fostered ongoing collaboration to hear Aboriginal perspectives, challenges and aspirations for the future of the area. In addition, an Aboriginal Reference Group provided guidance and input, as did Whadjuk Noongar representation on the Future of Fremantle Planning Committee.

The Future of Fremantle Cultural Heritage Report provides a written record of the important knowledge that has been shared through this process. The cultural and heritage significance of the Walyalup area and the many ideas and aspirations expressed by Aboriginal people for the future transformation of the Inner Harbour precinct have informed the visioning process.
