Keep Australia Beautiful Council's annual awards are being launched at a waste education and tree planting event with the City of Karratha where students will display their waste sculptures.

Two clean-ups will also be held in Dampier and Port Hedland with the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions; Pilbara Dive and Tours; and Care for Hedland.

There are nine categories that communities can enter to showcase their projects:

  • Litter Action
  • Waste Management
  • Community Containers for Change
  • Young Legends
  • Environmental Sustainability
  • Environmental Education
  • Heritage & Culture
  • Community Action & Wellbeing
  • General Appearance.

There is also a Leadership Award that can be presented at the judges’ discretion.

The Awards were initiated in Western Australia in 1969 and are now in their 55th year of recognising regional and remote community action.

Nominations for awards are open from 17 May to 23 August. Judges will visit participating towns and communities in September. Finalists will be announced in October.

For more information on how to enter your community projects visit the KABC website or email tidytowns@kabc.wa.gov.au

Comments attributed to KABC chair Michael Aspinall:

"I encourage our regional and remote communities to enter these awards and showcase how they are leading the way not only in litter prevention, but across nine other important categories.

“It’s wonderful to see communities working together to reduce litter, water and energy consumption while celebrating culture and heritage in an effort to protect Western Australia’s precious natural environment.

“Without pride and cohesion in community, we won’t have healthy and litter free communities. It's important to highlight this incredible work being done across the State."
