The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD), in collaboration with the State Government’s Invest and Trade WA Japan office, is supporting 17 WA businesses at the event in Tokyo.

The WA exhibitors from across the State include honey, olive oil, packaged foods, seafood, dairy and alcoholic beverages.

DPIRD Agribusiness, Food and Trade Executive Director Liam O’Connell said it was a good opportunity for local businesses to attend international trade exhibitions to help expand WA’s agrifood and beverage sector.

“FOODEX Japan 2024 is a great opportunity for WA businesses to showcase their products and forge new trade relationships in key export markets,” he said.

“Participation at this regional event reflects the importance of this bilateral trade relationship, as well as being an avenue to increase trade and investment, while also examining emerging opportunities for WA businesses to pursue.”

“DPIRD will also facilitate introductions and networking, helping new export businesses to build connections and confidence to support their offerings to key international markets.”

During the week DPIRD officers will facilitate in-market briefings for WA exhibitors, business matching with potential customers, a market insights tour, while also seeking export leads.

Japan is WA’s second biggest export destination, worth more than $1.6 billion in 2022-23.

Cereal grains make up the majority of WA’s Japanese trade comprising approximately 90 per cent of current exports.

“WA has a long standing trade relationship with the Japanese market, as a preferred supplier of premium wheat used to make udon noodles,” Mr O’Connell said.

“WA is a key supplier of avocadoes to Japan given our market access, while local businesses also export beef and sheep meat, lobster, citrus, truffles, wine and honey, to the Japanese market.

“Our team will be working hard on maintaining and strengthening these relationships, while exploring new opportunities for WA agrifood and beverage exports.”
