Holiday jobs.

We’ve all had them but for Grace, Asha and Harrison, their holiday work last year with Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage was a game changer.

As well as getting paid, learning new skills, and building networks in the WA public sector work, their initial work opportunity led to cadetships at the same department.

Grace, Asha and Harrison were 3 of 15 students who worked in 6 different agencies in the 2024 mid year holidays by applying for the Public Sector Vacation Program for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.

Grace, studying archaeology and Indigenous studies, now works in the department’s partnerships and agreements team.

“Applying for this holiday job and having this experience has been one of the best decisions I have made,” they say.

“This opportunity has not only provided me with on-site experience but also significantly contributed to my personal growth.”

Asha is a data analyst at DPLH and highlights the impact the program had on her confidence.

“The vacation program gave me so many opportunities to meet industry professionals, get to know other young blak students and get a taste for life in the public sector.

“It surprised me that I was being trusted to work on projects that would have real life implications and that I could perform at a professional standard,” she says.

Beyond professional skills, the program fosters a sense of community. Participants work alongside other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and mentors in a culturally supportive environment that encourages career growth.

“It’s great to have more mob in areas that benefit us,” says Harrison. “The program offers valuable experience and networking opportunities to get ahead.”

We're proud to continue this program into 2025, creating meaningful career pathways and empowering diverse, skilled talent to strengthen the public sector.

Applications are open from 1 to 30 April 2025.
