Our words are very important in human communication – and using the right words at the right time helps people feel valued and comfortable to be their authentic selves.

In this light, Understanding Diverse Sexualities and Genders supports agencies to continue their role in creating inclusive and welcoming work environments for everyone.

It outlines some of the key concepts and language around diverse sexualities and genders. It also has practical guidance including understanding:

  • how to respectfully ask for and use a person’s pronouns
  • gender identity and how it is different to sex and sexual orientation
  • steps we can each take to build inclusive workplaces for people of diverse sexualities and genders.

Being aware of language and concepts related to diverse sexualities and genders helps us talk about identity and relate to others in a meaningful and respectful way.

The guide was developed with support and advice from Pride in Diversity and is part of our action plan that aims to help public sector agencies create inclusive work environments for people of diverse sexualities and genders employed.
