The value our young professionals bring to DEMIRS

Building a diverse and inclusive workforce for the future.

We believe young people add significant value to the Department of Energy, Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety (DEMIRS) and the community we serve.

The department has several initiatives to recruit and retain young people. These avenues have contributed to a current workforce of almost 5 per cent youth, which continues to move towards our department's target of 5.8 per cent youth by June 2027 (as outlined in our Diversity, Multicultural and Inclusion Plan).

This year, 17 graduates joined the department as part of the 2025 DEMIRS Graduate Program, which has continued to grow over its 20-year existence.

In addition, the department provides valuable work experience, internship opportunities and traineeships, including a partnership with the University of Western Australia's McCusker Centre for Citizenship Internship, where students can contribute towards a project in a community-minded organisation.

Makiah joined the department as part of the School-based Traineeship Program, managing Years 11 and 12 while working for the department's payroll team two days a week. Following the 18-month program, Makiah received a nationally recognised Certificate II in Government and now works as a full-time permanent employee at DEMIRS.

"I wasn't sure if university was right for me, and I thought a traineeship was a good way to continue my schooling while gaining valuable work experience," Makiah said.

Makiah's strong work ethic is complemented by a willingness to learn and adapt. In the short time she has been an employee, Makiah has been given more responsibility within the payroll team and has pivoted to a Business Support Officer role for the People and Culture Director.

"I was more than happy to apply when a position came up after my traineeship. I really like my team in payroll – it's a nice environment to be in – and it has been great experience getting to know the different areas across human resources."

For every graduate, trainee or young person that joins DEMIRS, there is the potential for them to step into the leadership roles of the future. No one knows this more than Tyler Sujdovic.

Having started at the former Department of Mines and Petroleum in a work experience role during his first year of university, Tyler has worked his way up to Executive Director Resource and Environmental Compliance (REC). Tyler says he is motivated to see young people have the same opportunities as he did, which is why he introduced an internship into REC.

"Mentorship and opportunity are vital for growth," Tyler said.

"By providing undergraduates with the chance to experience our work, we help them understand the impact they can make, no matter where their career takes them.

"In a fast-changing world, the perspective of the next generation is invaluable. Their ideas facilitate progress and are key to overcoming future challenges."
