Following its tabling in Parliament, the Training Accreditation Council's 2023-2024 Annual Report is now available to view.

Highlights during this period include:

  • Council endorsed the "Focus on Quality: TAC Regulatory Strategy 2023-2025" to guide its regulatory approach;
  • Strategic reviews were conducted on units for competency that lead to High Risk Work Licences;
  • The Education Program saw high engagement with 1,361 participants attending events;
  • Council contributed to national VET quality reviews, including the revision of the RTO Standards; and
  • Early Changes to the RTO Standards were implemented to address workforce pressures and strengthen requirements.

The Council acknowledges the substantial efforts of RTOs during this period and their ongoing commitment to their learners and delivery of quality training and assessment in Western Australia.


Revised Standards for RTOs Update

Skills and Training Ministers met on Friday, 20 September 2024 to discuss steps to implement the revised Standards for Registered Training Organisations (RTOs).  It is expected that these Standards will be released this week.

Welcome Dr. Mairead Dempsey to the Training Accreditation Council

The Training Accreditation Council would like to welcome its newest member, Dr. Mairead Dempsey.

Dr. Dempsey brings over 35 years of VET experience in Western Australia, with the past five+ years dedicated to police training, education strategy, stakeholder engagement, partnerships, policy, governance, and quality assurance.

She has extensive expertise both locally and nationally, with over 18 years’ experience in VET regulation. This includes her role as a training organisation auditor and course accreditation reviewer for TAC and other regulatory authorities. Dr. Dempsey has a deep understanding of current national VET reform initiatives and has managed RTOs, gaining comprehensive insight into quality assurance, regulation and the RTO registration process. She currently serves as the Assistant Director of the Police Training Practice Division at the Western Australian Police Force.

Internal Audits for Continuous Improvement

2024 RTO and Stakeholder Survey Now Open

Council regulated RTOs will have received an invite to participate in the 2024 RTO and Stakeholder Survey. RTO’s feedback is crucial in shaping the Council’s regulatory services and improving communication with RTOs.

The survey is open to RTOs registered with the Council between 1 July 2023 and 30 June 2024. Eligible participants will have received a unique survey link via Research Solutions. While participation is voluntary, your input is highly valued and will directly contribute to enhancing the Council’s services.

We encourage you to complete the survey by the deadline of 13 October 2024.

RTO Annual Declaration on Compliance due 30 September

The 2023/2024 RTO Annual Declaration on Compliance is now open. A link to the Declaration was emailed to all TAC Registered Training Organisations' Legally Responsible Officers and Registration Officers.

RTOs are required to complete and submit their Declaration by 30 September 2024, regardless of whether any training has been conducted.

WA Training Award Winners

The Council extends its congratulations to all winners of the 2024 WA Training Awards. As the sponsor of the WA Trainer of the Year category, we offer particular congratulations to Lisa Piller, winner of this years award.

VET Information Standard

The new VET Information Standard has been approved and will replace the AVETMISS 8.0 VET Provider Collection. The new standard is a cornerstone of the VET Data Streamlining (VDS) initiative and will be progressively implemented, with the sector fully transitioned by December 31, 2028.

Beta version of 'training.gov.au' now live

The Commonwealth Government’s Department of Employment and Workplace Relations (DEWR) is undertaking improvements to make TGA more intuitive and accessible. It will have improved usability, include information on training packages under review, and will have faster and more relevant search functionality.

Assessment reform for the age of artificial intelligence

The emergence of generative artificial intelligence (AI), while creating new possibilities for learning and teaching, has exacerbated existing assessment challenges.  The most immediate concern is that students may use generative AI in assessment tasks, calling into question their personal learning attainment.

The Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA) has developed the document Assessment reform for the age of artificial intelligence, although aimed at higher education, provides relevant guidance to those in the VET sector on ways assessment practices can take advantage of the opportunities and manage the risks of AI,  specifically generative AI.

 

WorldSkills Lyon 2024

The Australian Skillaroos recently competed at the 2024 WorldSkills International Competition in Lyon, France, achieving impressive results.

Harrison Field earned a Bronze medal in Welding, while fourteen team members received Medallions of Excellence. Ross Colquhoun was awarded the prestigious Best of Nation title, capping off a successful showing for the Australian team.
