This year the award was won by a team from the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) led by reporter Kathryn Diss and including Keane Bourke, Daryna Zadvirna, and Jake Sturmer for their excellence in investigative journalism focussing on WA’s youth detention system and culminating in the report ‘An Avoidable Tragedy: The Death of Cleveland Dodd.’
The Acting Manager for Strategy and Engagement Dr Greg Watson attended the WA Media Awards on 21 September 2024 to present the trophy for the Social Equity Report category on behalf of the Commission. Greg noted the ABC team’s report exemplifies the vital contribution responsible journalism makes to improving social equity.
