Shark warning during salmon season

News story
Beachgoers are urged to stay clear of large schools of fish which can attract predators including sharks.
Last updated:

From March to late April, schools of Australian salmon migrate and gather to spawn and disperse their eggs on the WA coast as part of their lifecycle.

The salmon gather and feed on baitfish close to shore and may attract large predators. Swimmers and fishers are reminded to use caution as the annual salmon run brings an increased risk of a shark encounter.

Fishers are reminded to bleed their catches away from the water’s edge and discard fish waste responsibly away from swimmers.

Surfers and divers are encouraged to protect themselves with a scientifically-proven and approved personal shark deterrent device.

Stay informed of shark activity by visiting the SharkSmart WA website and downloading the app for near real-time information.

The app also has a quick link to call Water Police on 9442 8600 to report any shark sightings.
