WA is rocketing towards becoming 'the place for space', with a commercial satellite assembly facility on the way.
The WA Government has announced a grant of $3.5 million to build the facility - the first of its kind in WA.
The grant, provided through the Investment Attraction Fund, will assist WA Earth Observation company LatConnect 60 to develop the project.
The funding was announced during Western Australia Space Week, happening in Perth until 29 November.
The new facility will be designed to develop, manufacture and test satellite parts, assemble satellites and prepare them for launch.
LatConnect 60 is co-investing a further $3.5 million to fund the technologies required to assemble a satellite in WA to be launched from the US in 2026.
The satellite will be able to detect, monitor and quantify greenhouse gas emissions across the world.
LatConnect 60 aims to build up to 18 satellites in WA. This creates a key opportunity for WA, with the market size of the relevant industry expected to grow from US $2 billion in 2022 to US $13.2 billion by 2032.
Support for this project lines up with the Future State: Accelerating Diversify WA plan, which includes actions to develop WA's already established space sector to help diversify WA's economy.
