Paintwork described as “faulty and unsatisfactory” has resulted in the Building Services Board issuing a $2,000 fine to a Ballajura painter.

Amin Rahimi (PP/PC 8120) was subcontracted in July 2018 to do around $14,000 worth of interior and exterior painting at four residential units in Gosnells.

The property owner and the builder raised concerns about the quality of the job, even after Mr Rahimi attempted rectification works.

A painting inspector from Building and Energy (formerly the Building Commission) attended the site and reported that the paintwork was “faulty and unsatisfactory” and “inconsistent with good trade practice”. Issues included runny and patchy paint, embedded debris and overpainting on fixtures.

The builder later reimbursed the property owner for the painting costs and another painter completed the job.

At its August meeting, the Building Services Board found that Mr Rahimi had failed to properly manage and supervise a painting service that he was responsible for, as required by the Building Services (Registration) Act 2011.

Building and Energy A/Executive Director Saj Abdoolakhan said all building service practitioners, including registered painters, should carry out their duties to the expected standards regardless of the value of a contract.

“This fine should serve as a reminder that anyone participating in a regulated industry will face consequences if they don’t meet their obligations and responsibilities, including properly managing and supervising work,” he said.

Note: PP and PC numbers refer to registration as a painting practitioner or painting contractor. Under WA law, only registered painters can provide paid painting services valued at more than $1,000.
