Last week, Australian-based technology company Acusensus was awarded an up to five-year, $22.9 million contract to provide six new safety camera trailers following a competitive tender process.
The safety cameras will be the most advanced in the country and have the capability of detecting multiple offences simultaneously, including speeding, illegal mobile phone use, and the improper use of seat belts.
Completely mobile and with the flexibility to be operated and monitored 24/7, the cameras are expected to commence operation in early 2025.
Road Safety Commissioner Adrian Warner said now is the time for this new technology to become a vital and permanent road safety tool to be used right across the state.
'These new safety cameras will be a wake-up call, a chance for WA drivers to change their habits before it's too late. The message is clear and simple: these cameras are coming, slow down, buckle up and put your phone away.'
Acusensus Founder and Managing Director, Alexander Jannink, said the company was delighted to be working with the WA Government to deliver its trailer-based technology.
'This unique offering, combining different enforcement types into one trailer platform, will amplify the ability of the Road Safety Commission to enhance road safety outcomes across the state.'
The new safety cameras will complement the existing fleet of automated speed cameras operated by the WA Police Force.
The safety camera program is funded through the Road Trauma Trust Account, which sees 100 per cent of red light and safety camera infringements allocated to projects and programs which reduce injuries and deaths on WA roads.
