The Road Safety Commission has awarded $320,007 through the Road Trauma Trust Account to support new and innovative community projects and events aimed at promoting road safety in WA.
New project grants include:
- A pilot program using interactive theatre to educate novice drivers about the consequences of risky driving behaviour such as speeding, distracted driving, hooning, and drug or drink driving.
- One-day 4WD training sessions for young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men in Derby and Broome, designed to enhance driving skills and safety in the challenging and hazardous Kimberley driving environment.
- Funding for an eye-catching mural on the water tank at the entrance of Carnarvon to serve as a visual reminder for drivers passing through to slow down and stay alert.
- Support for a 10-minute video featuring local school kids in Morawa to raise awareness about road safety, especially the importance of safe behaviour like “stop, look, listen”. On completion it will be broadcast to the entire community at the town hall.
- An initiative to create a series of videos and distribute educational materials aimed at parents in the City of Wanneroo to promote safe eScooter use.
- A Slow Down for Freo bumper sticker awareness campaign backed by Fremantle residents to support traffic calming solutions in local streets.
Successful event grants include:
- The Shire of Wongan-Ballidu's "When Will We Meet Again?" road safety campaign, featuring photo portraits of local emergency responders who attend road crashes, highlighting how drivers' poor decisions impact not only themselves but others as well.
- Funding for a Regional Road Safety Day at Bruce Rock High School, aimed at educating students on the risks of regional driving, with specialised speakers and interactive activities.
- Support for Driver First Aid Training in Boyup Brook to upskill local road users in responding effectively to road crashes to make our regional roads safer. Participants will gain essential knowledge on post-crash response techniques and receive a First Aid Kit for their vehicle.
Road Safety Commissioner Adrian Warner commended all grant applicants who had taken the time to find local solutions to local road safety problems.
The Minister for Road Safety the Hon David Michael MLA, was also impressed to see so many communities taking the initiative to do something proactive to make positive change to their roads safer.
