Life can change in the blink of an eye

When Karen's son was seriously injured in a car crash, Road Trauma WA shone a light of support in a dark time.
Last updated:

Karen's life changed forever when her 17-year-old son Josh was seriously injured in a car crash.

What followed was a traumatic rollercoaster of fear and uncertainty.

Hours turned into days and then into weeks.

It was four months until Josh came home.

As Josh emerged from a coma, Karen was told that it would be a long road to recovery and was encouraged to call Road Trauma Support WA at Injury Matters - a free support service for people affected by road trauma funded by the Road Safety Commission.

The last thing Karen was thinking about was herself at such a busy and emotional time, but eventually she realised that she could better support Josh if she too was supported.

Help was immediate and no referral was needed. Karen chose the option of counselling over the phone or via telehealth which enabled her to focus on Josh's recovery.

Now over a year after the crash, Karen still values Injury Matters support. She has been able to return to work and while some days are better than others, Josh's spirit and new-found wisdom has been inspirational and they share a close bond.

'Hugs linger longer, conversations are treasured, and nothing is taken for granted,' Karen said.

Karen encourages anyone affected by road trauma to make the phone call to Injury Matters. Whether they’ve been injured in a crash, lost a loved one, caused a crash or witnessed one, road trauma specialists are ready to listen and help.

Signs that you or someone you know may need to seek professional advice are:

  • Trauma symptoms that are ongoing and have not reduced after 4-6 weeks.
  • Trouble functioning at home or work.
  • Feeling regularly confused, emotionally numb, or out of touch with reality.
  • Relationships suffering and finding it increasingly difficult to connect with and relate to others.
  • Avoiding things that are reminders of the traumatic event.
  • Experiencing thoughts of self-harm.
  • Increasing the use of alcohol or other harmful substances.

It could make a world of difference and shine a light of support at a time that can feel very dark.
