Grain, Seeds and Hay IFS chair, Esperance farmer Peter Harkness, encourages people with a passion for their industry to apply to be a scheme committee member.

Expressions of interest are now open to fill three vacancies to commence in July and people interested in future opportunities are also encouraged to register.

The committees oversee the management of the Grains, Seeds & Hay IFS, the Sheep & Goat IFS, as well as the Cattle IFS – representing the best interests of industry and scheme contributors, while providing effective governance.

Each committee determines which biosecurity threats require action, how to deal with these threats and industry funding arrangements.

The Grains, Seeds & Hay IFS is seeking two growers and/or supply chain representatives, particularly those who have experience in managing skeleton weed, while the Sheep & Goat IFS has one arising vacancy.

The Cattle IFS is also accepting expressions of interest from people who would like to participate in the future, as vacancies arise.

Producers contribute funds via the schemes to manage priority pests and diseases that could affect industry productivity, viability and sustainability.

Grain, Seeds and Hay IFS chair, Esperance farmer Peter Harkness, encouraged producers, growers and supply chain participants who are passionate about their industry and have an interest in biosecurity to get their application in soon.

“Successful applicants will be part of a committed, industry led team that help to manage potential and future pest and disease incursions at a whole of industry level,” he said.

“These committees manage operational and surveillance programs, including skeleton weed, Johne’s disease, bovine tuberculosis and footrot control which support industry production, profitability and sustainability.

“With pest and disease risks on the rise due to increasingly complex global trade channels, a changing climate and more international travel, the IFS Management Committees are crucial to supporting WA’s biosecurity defences.”
