We need your help in naming our new estuary science vessel.

The boat is a cutting-edge water quality monitoring vessel, which will help track the condition of Miaritch (Oyster Harbour), Nullaki (Wilson Inlet) and surrounding South Coast estuaries.

The vessel represents a significant upgrade from its predecessor, which faithfully served for 35 years.

As part of the vessel's introduction to the community, Albany and Denmark residents are invited to help name the new boat. Suggestions for the vessel's name can be made until 1 July 2024, with finalists to be selected and put to a public vote.

The person whose suggestion is selected for the boat’s name will receive an exclusive invite to join our scientists on an estuary monitoring expedition.

"The launch of this new monitoring vessel marks a significant milestone to enable our ongoing efforts to protect and improve our South Coast estuaries through the Healthy Estuaries WA program," said Malcolm Robb, our Aquatic Science Branch manager.

"Estuaries are such focal points for the community that it seemed only fitting that we got everyone’s help to name the boat.

“Our team of scientists spend long days on the boat measuring things like pH, oxygen levels, algae activity and nutrients. Having a boat specifically designed for this kind of monitoring will help make sure the science is as accurate as possible, reduce the time it takes to measure all these characteristics and help to keep our officers safe.

“The new boat includes features for divers to safely enter and exit the water and includes an instrument arm to safely and accurately lower monitoring instruments.”

The boat was constructed locally in Albany by expert fabrication engineers, supporting regional jobs and drawing on decades of local craftsmanship.

Submit your boat name idea on the Healthy Estuaries website.

Healthy Estuaries WA is a State Government program that aims to improve the health of our South West estuaries.
