At a recent stall we introduced activities designed to help raise awareness about our services and the protection against discrimination, harassment and victimisation provided by the Equal Opportunity Act (1984). The response was overwhelmingly positive, and based on this experience, we built our stall for the Expo and Fairday around offering activities. At both events the activities proved popular and effective in starting conversations with families and people of all ages who visited our stall.
One of our activities presents people with a question about ways to achieve an inclusive community, with the question determined by their spin of a ‘game show’ type wheel. We were delighted that in response to age-appropriate questions and scenarios, children and young people were keen to share and offered impressive insights.
The Commission’s badge maker had a good workout on both days and the appeal of colouring in a design and turning it into a mini wearable work of art was not limited to the young.
Commission officers at the two stalls were pleased to network with members of local community organisations, including those excited to learn that we provide a range of training and information sessions relating to equal opportunity.
If you are interested in the Equal Opportunity Commission delivering a session to your community group, please contact us by email at training@eoc.wa.gov.au or phone 9216 3927.
