Slow down and stay safe this long weekend.

As part of its You See, We See campaign, the Road Safety Commission is encouraging road users to think about safe driving this long weekend by using a recently forfeited vehicle as a visual reminder of the consequences of unsafe driving.

The reason behind the campaign?

On Sunday, 19 March 2023 the driver of the Lexus IS350 was clocked going at an alarming speed of 205km/h on the Forrest Highway, which is almost twice the posted speed limit of 110km/h. As a result of his actions, the driver was convicted of reckless driving, fined $2000, disqualified from driving for six months and had his car forfeited to the State.

Road Safety Commissioner Adrian Warner spoke today about the dangers of speeding ahead of the Australia Day double demerits period, from Thursday 25 to Sunday 28 January inclusive.

“This example is at the extreme end of speeding but even low-level speeding adds unnecessary risk - speeding is not ok.”

“The ultimate consequence when it comes to speeding is death, but we know for many people the fear of getting caught can be more powerful in influencing their behaviour.  And if the consequence of getting caught is losing your car then the disincentive to speed is even stronger”.

The forfeiture of the Lexus serves as a cautionary tale to all drivers to abide by the speed limit and practice safe driving habits at all times.

The car will then be sold, and the funds will go into the Road Trauma Trust Account to be utilised to help make our roads safer.

With speed being the number one killer on our roads, WA drivers are urged to slow down this Australia Day long weekend to make every journey safe.
