An Ellenbrook man has been fined $700 by the Midland Magistrates Court for advertising his motor vehicle repairer services while not having a licence.
Victor James Wright had advertised his mechanical repairs and servicing business on a website (www.ellenbrookauto.com.au) under the name of Ellenbrook Auto Services since October 2016. This business name was registered between July 2014 and February 2016 while Mr Wright had never held a motor vehicle repairers certificate.
Mr Wright pleaded guilty on 5 November 2018 to breaching the Motor Vehicle Repairers Act and was also ordered to pay costs of $418.
Commissioner for Consumer Protection David Hillyard said the licensing of the motor vehicle repair industry is designed to maintain a high standard of service and safety for consumers.
“Only fit, proper and appropriately qualified and trained people are allowed to hold certificates to carry out repair work and unlicensed repairers are undermining these standards,” Mr Hillyard said.
Consumers can check whether a motor vehicle repairer is licensed by doing a search on the Consumer Protection website: www.consumerprotection.wa.gov.au or look for the distinctive yellow and black sign with the tick of approval displayed at their premises. Unlicensed motor vehicle repairers can be reported by emailing consumer@demirs.wa.gov.au or by calling 1300 30 40 54.
