The release of the Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) Action Plan highlights the State’s potential to become a world leader in CCUS, leveraging our existing infrastructure, highly skilled workforce, and suitable geological formations.
To reach net zero emissions by 2050, there is an important role for CCUS in the decarbonisation mix as part of a suite of low emissions technologies. CCUS technologies capture, transport, utilise and store carbon dioxide emissions from industrial activities, and will be particularly important in decarbonising WA’s hard-to-abate heavy industries.
The CCUS Action Plan has been developed to enhance policy certainty, attract investment, accelerate the deployment of proven technology and infrastructure, and support research and development of new and emerging CCUS technology.
To support the plan, a $26 milllion funding boost through the Investment and Attraction Fund has been granted to 2 Western Australian CCUS projects:
- A $15 million grant will support Australian Gas Infrastructure Group (AGIG( to develop a transmission pipeline for an offshore multi-user CCS hub in the Pilbara
- An $11 million grant will support the Mitsui E&P Australia Pty Limited and WesCEF to develop the Cygnus CCS hub in the Mid West.
The Action Plan was informed by a consultation process, including with industry, research organisations, and community representatives.
