Farm mapping, fisheries education and electronic identification for livestock are among the diverse offering at the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) display for this year’s Mingenew Midwest Expo.

Livestock producers will be able to access up-to-date information about the national rollout of sheep and goat electronic identification (eID).

DPIRD sheep and goat eID project manager Michael Britton said producers would have the opportunity to discuss any issues or benefits they have experienced in transitioning toward an eID regime.

“With the requirement for any sheep and goats born from 1 January 2025 onward to be eID-tagged, and all older stock to be tagged from 1 July 2026, this is a great opportunity for producers to speak with DPIRD officers in person,” Mr Britton said.

“Visitors to the display with current Property Identification Codes can go into the draw to win one of three sets of one hundred eID tags of their choice.”

Information will be available about the WaterSmart Farms project, which aims to improve water security and resilience in a drying climate through improving dam capture and storage, trialling small-scale desalination and investigating fractured rock aquifers.

The carbon farming and bioenergy display will have information on how farmers can access these emerging industries. DPIRD staff will be on hand to discuss local case studies and what to consider in starting a carbon farming project.

The popular mapping section will return, allowing farmers to view their properties.

DPIRD research scientist Mark Sander said farmers could check and confirm their contact details so that in an emergency, DPIRD is able to contact them.

“Every farm checked will go into the draw to win a laminated A0 aerial map of their property,” Mr Sander said.

DPIRD’s fisheries education team will also be on hand to provide up to date information on recreational fishing in WA.

Visitors can take the opportunity to chat to DPIRD staff about new fishing rules, how to care for your catch and how to support the sustainable management of WA’s fisheries.

The regional digital solution team will discuss digital connectivity in regional WA, including completed and in-progress mobile and broadband projects across the State, along with options for improving connectivity for regional homes and businesses.

DPIRD officers will be at the site to assist growers with enquiries relating to the skeleton weed program, including eradication and updates to winter treatment recommendations.

The Mingenew Midwest Expo runs from 8–9 August. The department’s display is located at stands 111 and 112 on Three Springs Street.
