Compliance and enforcement reporting

Supporting industry education and greater transparency to the community.

The Department of Energy, Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety (DEMIRS) continues to strengthen its approach to environmental regulation in the resources sector.

Utilising its risk-based compliance methodology, the department is focused on undertaking a broad range of compliance activities and developing strong regulatory frameworks in consultation with stakeholders. This is supported by industry education and greater transparency to the community regarding compliance and enforcement activities.

In line with this approach, the department has released its first updated Compliance and Enforcement Report.

Building upon existing compliance and enforcement reporting, it outlines the outcomes of compliance activities, as well as greater, in-depth commentary about the environmental compliance trends the department is identifying.

DEMIRS’ Resource and Environmental Compliance Executive Director Tyler Sujdovic says the department is committed to facilitating responsible resources development and meeting the high expectations of the Western Australian community.

“We recognise this starts with transparent and consistent communication to industry about our expectations of best-practice environmental management,” said Mr Sujdovic.

“Another priority area is providing greater transparency to the community regarding our compliance and enforcement activities.”

The report will consist of the mining operator’s name alongside the non-compliance information, as outlined in the Environmental Compliance and Enforcement Administrative Procedure released last year.

Moving forward, the Compliance and Enforcement Report will be published biannually through the Resource and Environmental Regulation eNewsletter.
