On 17 January 2022, a truck was caught in the vicinity of Hopkins Road in Nowergup entering a property with a full load and was photographed leaving with an empty tray.

Investigators from the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation later discovered the dumped waste on the site. It was later established the waste material originated from a property in Butler, where the accused was contracted to undertake work during the time of the incident occurring.

On 11 November 2024 in the Joondalup Magistrates Court, the company and its director received fines of $6,000 and $2,000 respectively for illegally dumping the waste.

Fines totalling $2,500 were also issued to the company and its director after an order to identify who was driving the truck when the offence occurred was ignored.

DWER Executive Director of Assurance, Ruth Dowd, said the department would continue to prosecute illegal dumpers.

“Offenders can expect a knock on their door after they have committed the crime,” she said.
