As part of the project 'Building Connections: Navigating the intersection of disability, discrimination, and the struggle to access rights' on 31 August 2024 Acting Manager Strategy and Engagement Greg Watson and Community Education and Training Officer Kayla Manuel met with members of Blind Citizens of Western Australia (BCWA), a not-for-profit, peer led organisation which is run by and for people who are blind or vision impaired.

During the meeting BCWA members shared individual experiences of discrimination and its impact on their lives. They discussed issues encountered working within various systems as well as complaints made to a range of organisations and businesses in WA. The discussion provided well considered and practical information to guide organisations in better training their staff on responsibilities to members of the blind and visually impaired community and to improve engagement overall.

Kayla expressed the Commission’s appreciation to BCWA saying, ‘We are thankful for everyone who attended and took the time to share their experiences with us. It was an incredibly informative and impactful session.’
