City of lights shines for WA Space Week

Up to 700 participants attended Space Week to network and learn about Western Australia's strong space capabilities and transferable technologies.

Western Australia Space Week showcased WA as the 'place for space' and highlighted the benefits of space data, services and technologies for all industries.

With more than 60 years in the space industry and more than 130 national and international organisations in the sector, WA's expertise was on display during the week. 

High-profile events included the 30th Asia-Pacific Regional Space Agency Forum (APRSAF), with the Indo-Pacific Space and Earth Conference (IPSEC) and the Andy Thomas Australian Space Education Forum.

The week kicked off with the Andy Thomas Space Foundation Education Forum, held with APRSAF to help students from primary school to university level to learn about career pathways in the space industry.

This event supported WA Government's strategy to enhance STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) skills. 

APRSAF-30's theme of ‘Collaborating to Build a Sustainable and Responsible Regional Space Sector’ and brought together global leaders from space agencies, industry, and academia. 

Organised with support from the WA Government, it supported the region’s space community in promoting its space capabilities to the world.

IPSEC followed on from the successful inaugural event last year and brings together leaders from industries including space, resources, defence, agriculture, sustainability, critical technologies, education and investment, from across the Indo-Pacific and beyond.

As a principal event partner for the event, The Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation (JTSI) hosted an exhibition booth highlighting WA’s space sector alongside investment opportunities in WA.

It was a chance to promote WA's diverse and strong economy, with opportunities for space technology and data across mining, agriculture, defence, energy and maritime industry sectors.

And to highlight WA's capability in areas such as ground-based satellite and deep space communications, and remote operations automation and robotics.

As part of WA Space Week, there was a joint APRSAF and IPSEC trade exhibition, showcasing innovations and partnerships. 

During the week there were major announcements were made, highlighting the State Government's commitment to supporting WA's space sector. 

LatConnect 60 received $3.5million from the WA Government's Investment Attraction Fund to establish WA's first commercial satellite manufacturing facility. Learn more in the announcement article.

WA Space Week reinforced the State's role in driving the diversification of the WA economy, in line with the Future State: Accelerating Diversify WA strategy.
