The Building Services (Registration) Amendment Regulations 2024 (Amendment Regulations) were published on 18 September 2024 on the WA legislation website and come into effect from 1 November 2024.
The Amendment Regulations update regulation 7(2) of the Building Services (Registration) Regulations 2011 (BSR Regulations).
Assessing applications for the renewal of a building service provider’s registration can be a complex process, often resulting in registrations expiring before the assessment is complete.
While the Building Services (Registration) Act 2011 (the BSR Act) ensures registrations remain valid until the assessment process is finalised, the Building Services Board and the Department of Energy, Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety (DEMIRS) acknowledge this can cause uncertainty for customers and industry when a current registration certificate is unavailable.
What is the change?
To help address this issue, the BSR Regulations have been amended to allow building service providers to apply for the renewal of their registration up to 12 weeks before it expires. This change takes effect on 1 November 2024.
Previously, applications could only be made up to 8 weeks before a registration expired. This amendment now gives building service providers an additional 4 weeks to submit a renewal application.
DEMIRS will continue to provide courtesy renewal reminders by SMS and email. To receive these reminders, building service providers must ensure their mobile phone number and email address are up to date.
