Open from 10am every day during the Show, the DPIRD Farm 2 Food display (within the Woolworth's Ag Pavilion) includes the opportunity to sign up for next month’s Biosecurity Blitz to help protect our food producers in Western Australia.
DPIRD Biosecurity Executive Director Victoria Aitken said Western Australian consumers were fortunate to enjoy a wide variety of locally grown produce, with good biosecurity playing a vital role in food production.
“The DPIRD display will have free bug-related activities for kids and staff on site to show home gardeners how easy it is to take part in biosecurity programs that help protect our agriculture and food industries in WA,” Ms Aitken said.
“Visitors can find out more about pests currently being targeted in the Perth metropolitan area, including Queensland fruit fly and polyphagous shot-hole borer, as well as a range of other exotic pests to watch out for.”
There are heaps of free fun backyard biosecurity activities to keep the whole family entertained, including a race against the clock to pick up fallen citrus fruit, a scavenger hunt for pest bugs, and parents can relax in the attractive backyard garden while the kids make a bug headband.
“While at the display, visitors can sign up to join the Biosecurity Blitz, which runs from 16 October to 16 November, for their chance to win a garden hamper each day,” Ms Aitken said.
“Blitz participants are encouraged to download the MyPestGuide® Reporter app so they can easily report findings on their phones.”
DPIRD’s Buy West Eat Best program is also supporting its food and beverage members exhibiting at the show.
Food Industry Development manager Deborah Pett encouraged showgoers to look for the distinctive green Buy West Eat Best bite mark logo to support local brands and businesses that grow, farm, fish, process, prepare and serve delicious produce from WA.
“In the Farm 2 Food displays in the Woolworths Agriculture Pavilion, visitors can join a cooking demo every day with Sweeter Banana and WA Apples and Pears,” Ms Pett said.
“On AgVenture Hill there's a new marquee where visitors can see how WA potatoes grow and kids can cook up a snack of home fries before trying the Spud Shed spud game.
“A visit to the show is never complete without a stroll through the Dairy Pavilion to visit WAFarmersFirst and heaps more delicious local produce.
“Visitors can also keep an eye out for a great lineup of other Buy West Eat Best members at the show, including WA Potatoes, Lilydale Chicken, Brownes Dairy, Bannister Downs Dairy, Mundella Foods, and the Gascoyne Food Council.”
The 2023 Perth Royal Show runs from 23 September to 30 September, at the Claremont Showground.
