The Building Commission has sought ministerial approval to allow new applications for registration as a Building Surveying Practitioner Technician to be accepted beyond 2 April 2015.

The Building Services (Registration) Regulations 2011 currently do not allow for new applications for this class of registration beyond 2 April 2015. However, discussions among State regulators, the Australian Institute of Building Surveyors and the Construction Property Services Industry Skills Council suggest that there is support at a national level to create or retain a Level 3 class of registration similar to that of technicians in Western Australia.

Until the review of the qualifications framework is completed and the future of a third class of registration is determined, it is proposed that the Regulations be changed to allow new applications.

The changes are likely to come into effect well before the 2 April 2015 expiry date.

The proposed changes will not affect currently registered technicians or their registration renewal date.
