The State Government has launched a public awareness campaign to assist people affected by changes to legislation involving superannuation contributions made by employers.

The Superannuation Choice of Fund legislation requires employers to inform and give State award workers the right to choose their own superannuation fund. It came into effect in January.

The changes will affect employees covered by State industrial agreements, awards and orders.

Labour Relations Minister Cheryl Edwardes said the public awareness campaign, through the electronic and print media, was essential to highlight the changes to, and those affected by, Western Australia's new superannuation laws.

The campaign includes a detailed, easy-to-read booklet which answers the most commonly asked questions about the new legislation and a flyer mail-out. The Department of Productivity and Labour Relations (DOPLAR) also has a public information hotline - 1300 655 266 - to assist with public inquiries.

"Under the legislation introduced earlier this year, many people now have the right to choose the super fund into which their employer pays their contributions," Mrs Edwardes said.

"Employers must inform staff of the right to choose under the new laws.

"And people who decide to exercise their right to choose a fund, should do so carefully.

"Obviously, not everybody is affected by the changes - it only applies to those on State industrial agreements, awards and orders but people can telephone DOPLAR on 9 222 7754 to get a free copy of the new booklet or the Wageline on 1300 655 266 to get more information."

Information about the new legislation can also be found on the DOPLAR website, http://www.wa.gov.au/doplar or by facsimile 9 222 7711.
