The week kicked off with a smoking ceremony that cleansed and purified the space, providing a moment for participants to connect with Country and Traditional Owners.

Aboriginal Engagement and Partnerships team member Lillian Aigner commended the department’s NAIDOC Week planning committee for their effort organising a series of engaging and educational activities.

“The success of the art sessions, workshops, ceremony, and activities is a credit to the committee's commitment to creating an inclusive and informative environment,” Lillian said.

Special guests Rhys and the team from 'Acknowledge This!' encouraged knowledge sharing and personal growth to craft a meaningful Acknowledgement of Country.

An art session saw staff channel their creativity into painting on canvas, culminating in a collaborative handprint mural that symbolised unity and connection to the land.

Creativity continued with two 'Deadly Denim' workshops, where staff personalised their denim with First Nations designs, sparking conversations about cultural expression and storytelling through fashion.

The office-based activities ended with a fun game of 'Blak Bingo', introducing First Nations terms and historical facts.

Lillian said the week’s events left a lasting impression with staff, contributing to an ongoing dialogue about First Nations Australian history and culture.

“As we wrap up NAIDOC Week, it's important to remember our journey of cultural understanding doesn't end here. This week’s learnings and experiences can be integrated into our daily lives and practices,” Lillian said.

“An ongoing commitment to learning and growth will help us build a more inclusive and aware community year-round.”
