Iron Ore Wagons

As an initiative under the WA Recovery Plan, the Department of Job, Tourism, Science and Innovation has created an action group comprising of the major iron ore project proponents, Union and Industry Association representatives.

This action group will undertake a pre-feasibility study into the manufacturing, refurbishment and maintenance of iron ore railcar wagons in Western Australia. The study report will provide recommendations to the WA Government on priority actions to develop this industry.

This initiative is an outcome of the Steel Fabrication Roundtable chaired by the Premier in February 2019, which had an overall objective to initiate open discussion with iron ore project proponents, unions and the steel fabrication industry on the long-term competitiveness of the steel fabrication industry in supplying to the iron ore sector.

Development of the industry has the potential to deliver significant economic stimulus to regional WA, including jobs creation and workforce skilling. While there will be a focus on the Pilbara initially, the report will also look at alternative locations.
