John Todd was one of Western Australia’s most influential figures in Australian Rules football, and his contribution to the sport was nothing short of remarkable.
Born in Manjimup in 1938, his love of playing the game started at the Deanmill Football Club. John’s talents were apparent early, and in 1951, at 13 years of age, he was selected in the WA State Schoolboys Football Team, returning the following year as Captain. In 1954, South Fremantle recruited him to play in the Reserves grand final, where he kicked seven goals. In 1955, at the age of 17, John made his senior WAFL debut and was awarded the Sandover Medal the same year. He went on to play a total of 132 games for the Bulldogs, as well as 13 games for Western Australia.
Injury sadly cut short John’s playing career, but it didn’t stop his passion for the game, successfully transitioning to become one of the WAFL's greatest coaches.
He went on to coach South Fremantle, East Fremantle and Swan Districts, winning a total of six WAFL premierships. He was appointed as the senior coach of the West Coast Eagles in 1988 and led them to their inaugural finals campaign that same year.
By the end of 2002, when John retired, he had coached a staggering total of 721 League games, 14 State of Origin/Interstate Championship games, and six International Rules matches.
Selected on the All-Australian team as a player and coach, John Todd was inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame in 2003 and the West Australian Football Hall of Fame in 2004.
